I am sure you know about Tenerife, but are you aware of the lesser known islands in the Canaries like La Palma, La Gomera and El Hierro?

Have you ever contemplated spending 3-5 weeks of your miserable cold winter in a place, where you are most likely to be greeted by the sun every morning? The average temperature in the Canary Islands are
24,2 ºC in the summer and 17,4 in winter. It's like  summer  or spring all year round?

Well, if you are a senior citizen, or by other means so lucky that your time is your own...stop dreaming and start packing,

You can sail from Cadiz or Huelva in Southern Spain to Tenerife, which is the biggest and most popular island among tourists and have some unforgetable weeks. You can also sail directly from Cadiz to La Palma, but if you want to go to La Gomera or El Hierro  you can catch a ferry to both places from Tenerife...

Tenerife is the largest of the seven inhabited Canarie Islands  and has close to one million permanent residents. However the island cater for up to four million visitors a year!

Santa Cruz de Tenerife has been the capital in Tenerife since 1833 and shares its function as the capital of the Autonomous Community of the Canary Islands with Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.

Santa Cruz de Tenerife is located in the north-east of the Island and is a wonderful bright and colourful city. If you happen to visit while the Carnival takes place, you are in for an amazing experience; this is the second biggest carnival in the world, next after Rio de Janairo in Brazil.

El Hierro also called Isla del Meridiano is the smallest of the seven main islands and have a population of just 10,798 people. The island is the most  southern situated island in the Canary Islands.

The capital of this small island is Valverde, also known as "the city in the clouds",  as it
is situated 600 metres above sea level - originally so it would not be visible from the sea to passing pirate ships.

Despite being the smallest of the Islands, El Hierro has been declared a World Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO. With the inauguration of the Gorona del Viento hydroelectric plant El Hierro has becomes the first island to be completely self sufficient using only renewable energy.

It's a great place for divers. Despite its size, you can explore 46 dive sites that make El Hierro island a marine paradise full of life. It's one of the world's dream diving sites with more than ten top-class spots - all full of volcanic features and marine life.

You don't need to feel cut off from family and friends, while spending some weeks under the sun, as El Hierro offers free wifi all over the island.

La Gomera is the second smallest of the seven main Canary Islands.
This beautiful little island was awarded World Biosphere Reserve status in 2011, thanks to the pristine nature of its marine and terrestrial ecosystems.

If you like walking, pack your walking boots and enjoy more than 600 km of breathtaking trails. Walk throuh lush green rainforrest and across the national park  and enjoy the fresh blue Atlantic seawater, which is never far away, and relax on the
extraordinary black sandy beaches on this Atlantic volcanic island off the coast of Western Africa.

La Gomera even has it own "language" called
"Gomeran whistle", also known as el silbo "the whistle", which is a whistled register of Spanish used by the locals in La Gomera to communicate across the deep ravines and narrow valleys that run through the island.

San Sebastian de La Gomera on the east coast is the capital of La Gomera. The capital also hosts the main harbour, which offers several ferry routes to the islands of Tenerife, La Palma and El Hierro

Just half an hour's drive from the capital you will find "The Juwel of La Gomera" or  Agula, as this charming old village is called. It is placed on a natural platform giving you expansive views of the Atlantic Ocean and of Teide, the famous volcano on  Tenerife island - next-door.

La Palma or "The Isla Bonita" is the fifth largest and the most north-westerly situated of the main Canary Islands.
The island is not just stunningly beautiful, it also offers culture, charm, culinary delights, deserted beaches with crystal-clear water and
plenty of outdoor leisure activities like Hiking, mountain bike, diving, paragliding, and boat trips where you can explore and enjoy La Palmas main attraction, which is its stunning nature.
Have an appetizer in the video below...
In the center of the island is the Caldera de Taburiente National Park - Parque Nacional de la Caldera de Taburiente.

La Palma is a place that lifts your spirit, this is where you can breathe fresh air, recharge your batteries and find peace surrounded by unspoilt nature.

You can enjoy a walk on one of the many nature trails in August without suffering from heat and pamper youself with a swim in the sea, or in one of the natural seawater pools on the island in winter without feeling cold.

Santa Cruz de La Palma, the capital of La Palma, is small but oozes ambiance with its cobbled streets and charmig houses and the only commerciel port on the island. The town has been declared a Culturel Asset (historic-artistic setting).
