Tapas, Bocaddillos & Menu del Dias

7/7/2013

When in Rome, do like the Romans ... or when in Spain: do like the Spanish.

Sure, you can get international food in Spain - but do yourself a favour and taste the Spanish food while visiting. It's part of your holiday experience and chances are;  you'll love it!

Keep an eye out for crowded local bars and cafés; if the place is packed with Spanish people, it usually means the food is good.

Bocaddillos

Whether you are staying in a hotel or in a holiday home, leave the buffet breakfast or the kitchen in your holiday home alone, one of your mornings, and take a stroll out in the neighbourhood to see where the Spanish have their morning coffee and breakfast.
There are many different types of coffee in Spain. If you want black coffee order Café Solo - but remember to add "Grande" (Café Solo Grande) otherwise you will get a very tiny strong black coffee. If you want coffee with warm milk, order Café con Leche. Coffee is normally served in a glass.
A typical Spanish breakfast is a bocaddillo (baguette) which you can get fresh or toasted with olive oil and tomatoes. The tomatoes are not like the ones you get in your local supermarket at home, these tomatoes are most likely freshly picked and they actually taste of tomatoes.

How to order coffee in Spain

Café Solo – half a glass of single espresso
Café Solo Grande – full glass of single espresso
Café Doble – double espresso
Café con Leche  –  half coffee /  half milk
Café Cortado – espresso with a little bit of milk
Carajillo – coffee  with a twist of brandy or whiskey

Tapas

A brilliant thing about the Spanish cafés is that they serve tapas. This basically means you can get a varied, filling, tasty lunch for very little money - depending on where you go.
In Granada you still get free tapas with every drink you buy. Most other places you pay from 0.50 EUR to 2.50 EUR per tapas.
The selection of tapas vary from bar to bar and from season to season, however they are all served with fresh bread, which purpose is to dip into the sauce to soak it up.

Menu del Dia

Menu del Dia or the meu of the day is a very economical way of eating while in Spain. You normally get a starter, a main meal and a dessert for one budget price.
In most places you will have a choice of starters like salad or soup. The main meal is usually a choice between meat or fish and the dessert a choice between coffee or dessert. Some places Menu del Dia is only served for lunch between 14.00 and 17.00

Carnival in Santa Cruz de Tenerife takes place from the 6th to 17th of February 2013.
Life is full of choices and it's all about making the right choice at the right time!

If you are contemplating visiting Tenerife in 2013, the first choice you have to make is whether to fly or to go by ferry.
Tenerife is the largest of the 7 Canary Islands placed south west of Morocco. With 22º C as an average temperature year round, it doesn't really matter what time of year you go - unless you want to experience Santa Cruz during the Carnival from the 6th  to 17th of February.

Fly to Tenerife

Flying is the choice of the majority and you will most likely not have any trouble finding a flight.

Jet2.com, offers cheap flights to Tenerife in the Canary Islands from many UK airports.

Ryanair, Condor Airlines, Air France and Spanair are only a few of all the other airlines flying to Tenerife from different destinations in Europe. Just Google it!

Tenerife by Ferry

If you want to combine Tenerife with a "mini-cruise", you should take the ferry from Cadiz in southern Spain to Santa Cruz de Tenerife. There is one sailing a week and the trip takes roughly 57 hours.

You will be sailing with Acciona Trasmediterranea Ferries, which is one of the most modern and best equipped fleets in Spain, using the latest technological advances in security and quality for its on board services.

The ferries are equipped to provide the highest levels of comfort so you will find the journey an attractive part of your holidays: swimming pool, cabins, bar, restaurant, cinema and TV room, disco, air conditioning and a spacious garage so that you can take your own car with you.

Prices depends on the time of year, whether you are taking your car or not and which level of comfort you demand.

Mallorca by Ferry from Barcelona

5/8/2012

Most people know the island of Mallorca from a package holiday which means flying in as a group, lining up for the tourist coach and being delivered by the tour-guide at the check-in desk at the pre-booked hotel.

Alcudia on the North Coast of Mallorca.
Nothing wrong with that! I have done it myself, and I have even enjoyed it. However if you are exploring Spain by car you can easily fit a ferry to Mallorca into your travel plans. And if you are wondering how to get to Mallorca by ferry – I am just about to tell you.

From mainland Spain you can reach Mallorca in between 5 to 7 hours from Barcelona, Denia or Valencia.

From Barcelona you can sail to Alcudia on the North side of Mallorca or to Palma on the west side, while the routes from Denia and Valencia only sail to Palma.

I don’t think Barcelona in the north east of Spain needs to be placed further on the map, but if you are not that familiar with Spanish geography you might want to know that Denia is situated on Costa Blanca.

A beautiful drive along the coast road N 332 will get you there and so will the highway AP7. Valencia – the third largest city in Spain is approximately 100km further north along the Coast from Denia.

You can book a return ticket, but if you plan to visit one of the other Balearic Islands – may I suggest you book a one-way ticket on the ferry to Mallorca. This gives you the option of sailing back to mainland Spain from Menorca or Ibiza.

You can also reduce the driving quiet a bit if you sail from Denia or Valencia to Mallorca on a single ticket and book your ferry back from Mallorca to Barcelona. – Or the other way around. Doing Mallorca by ferry is a brilliant opportunity to experience different areas of Spain.

Two Ferry Companies covers all the traffic from mainland Spain to Mallorca: Balearia- and Trasmediterranea Ferries. Together the two companies conduct more than 50 crossings weekly.

Taking a ferry to Mallorca from mainland Spain is part of your holiday. Between 5 and 7 hours on the blue Mediterranean Sea, depending on which route you choose, is not a hassle – it is a pleasure.

Hasta la vista in Mallorca and smooth sailing!

Besides from connecting Ibiza with the other Balearic Islands, direct flights connect Ibiza with Barcelona, Bilbao, Madrid, London-Gatwick, Stuttgart, Zurich, Paris-Charles de Gaulle, Dublin, Geneva, Blackpool, Edinburgh, Leeds/Bradford and many others.

Ibiza’s nickname is “the clubbing capital of the world”, due to its plenty and unique nightspots and the amount of bars and restaurants that can be found all over the island but particularly in all the winding, narrow streets of Ibiza Town.

However if you are more into beach life, atmospheric small villages, tranquil relaxation and stunning nature – an Ibiza villa holiday on the north side of the island will provide you with just that.

San Juan is a really laid back relaxing village in the North. It is still regarded as the hippie headquarter in Ibiza, and it seems to attract people seeking an alternative lifestyle and with interest in philosophy, spirituality and a healthy lifestyle.

Whether you fly or take a ferry to Ibiza you will have plenty of resorts and villas to choose from, as Ibiza has something for everybody. If you want to spoil your family with an Ibiza holiday home in Ibiza Town, this is an option as well.

Brittany Ferries perform 4 return sailings per week from Portmouth and Plymouth with the luxurious flagship mv Pont-Aven and their latest vessel mv Cap Finistere.

Pont-Aven has stunning features and a very high standard of facilities and accommodation.

The Cap Finistere has a somewhat more intimate, and less formal ambience – but it still retain a sense of space and comfort.

When you book ferry from UK to Spain you might want to be aware that Pont-Aven sails from Portsmouth on Wednesdays and from Plymouth on Sundays while Cap Finistere only sails on the Portsmouth – Santander Route, and does so on Tuesdays and Fridays.

If you have a passion for whales and dolphins you have to choose the ferry Cap Finistere from Portsmouth! Entertainment varies from the two ferries to Spain and from season to season but both ferries have sundeck, swimming pools, cinemas – where you can catch up on the latest film releases and live entertainment.
