El Hierro also called Isla del Meridiano is the smallest of the seven main islands and have a population of just 10,798 people. The island is the most southern situated island in the Canary Islands. The capital of this small island is Valverde, also known as "the city in the clouds", as it is situated 600 metres above sea level - originally so it would not be visible from the sea to passing pirate ships.
